All over the world, water is a much sought-after good: Growing demands of agriculture, drinking water supply, industry, and energy continue to increase the pressure on existing water resources. This contrasts with efforts to preserve remaining aquatic habitats while developing innovative solutions for a sustainable water use. To initiate a critical dialogue, ETH Zurich organized its ETH Talk in July 2012 around the question: "What is the value of water??.
Three input presentations were given in the first part of the event, by Peter Brabeck-Letmathe (President of the Board of Directors, Nestlé S.A.) on "Water needs a Price?, Peter Niggli (General Manager of Alliance Sud) on "Water needs recognition as public good?, and Janet Hering (Director of EAWAG and Professor at ETH/EPFL) on "Water needs research and training?.
In the second part of the event representatives of science, economy and the non-governmental sector discussed about the global challenges related to water distribution and consumption. The event was organized by ETH Zurich and the Competence Center for Environment and Sustainability (CCES). It was realized in cooperation with Eawag, the aquatic research institute of the ETH domain.
