ETH Energy Talks 2011

The global demand for safe, affordable, and reliable energy sources is growing constantly. Leading in innovation and technology, Switzerland plays an important role in designing the future of sustainable energy: with its broad and interdisciplinary approach, ETH Zurich can provide scientifically-founded analyses and offer comprehensive perspectives. Based on this, ETH Zurich organized the Energy Talk on "Designing the Future of Sustainable Energy – Chances and Challenges for Switzerland? in September 2011. As key note speaker, ETH Zurich welcomed Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard.

In the first part of the event three ETH professors presented the results of their study "Energy Future Switzerland?, outlining possible scenarios and future options for sustainable energy in Switzerland: Professor Konstantinos Boulouchos illustrated courses of action through the lenses of profitability, security and risk; Professor Göran Andersson discussed the themes of efficiency, renewable energy, and electrification; lastly, Professor Lucas Bretschger spoke about the consequences of a sustainable energy future, accounting for competitiveness, economic development, as well as politics.

In what followed, the ETH scientists' study was scrutinized by a number of "Challengers?, among others Tony Kaiser (University Relations ALSTOM Power, Director of Energietrialog Schweiz), Ruedi Noser (Member of the National Council, President of the Administrative Board of the Noser Group), and Aline Trede (Vice President of the Green Party, Member of Berne City Council).

In the second part of the event Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard spoke about the future energy policy in Switzerland. High-profile representatives of Swiss economy and society joined into a discussion round after her talk. ETH Zurich Professors Massimo Filippini and Alexander Wokaun contributed to the round by adding valuable scientific inputs.
