The dominant principles of modern, industrial, consumerist society are growth, efficiency and consumer sovereignty. In combination they have arguably served well those peoples who sought to grow
their economies and build their political power. But today, the challenge is different; it is to learn to live well by living well within our means. For that, principles are needed that, among other things, deal with humans’ propensity toward excess and that
have ecological content. I develop four such principles—intermittency, sufficiency, capping and source. Each derives from ecological functioning and yet can be found in human practice, albeit practice that is often marginal to the dominant patterns of growth,
consumption and cost displacement.

What drives people that motivate others? How do successful pioneers live their visions? How can own ideas change the world?
We would like to discuss these and similar questions with those who have realized and are realizing their ideas – day to day, with their hearts and minds, and with global success.
Within the framework of the event series "Pioneers in Sustainability" students of ETH Zurich and other universities meet and interact with leading personalities from the field of sustainability. Through the direct exchange over experiences and
biographies, students will learn from pioneering personalities what it takes and what it means to be a "change agent".
The event takes place three times per year and are composed in three parts:
- A personality from the field of sustainability presents personal career steps, motivations, visions and the obstacles faced along the way
- In a subsequent “Speed-Dating” session the event participants exchange their ideas and questions around the topic of “change agents”
- In turn, the best ideas will be presented and discussed during a concluding Apéro
The first event of the series will host Mathis Wackernagel, co-founder of the "Global Footprint Network", and one of the world-leading figures when it comes to shaping the discussion of sustainable development. During last year’s Rio+20 conference,
Wackernagel was awarded the prestigious "Blue Planet Prize" for his longstanding engagement.
As an alumni of ETH Zurich, Mathis Wackernagel will speak about the milestones of his career, his engagement in science, economy, and politics. He will also outline the challenges he faced on the way to becoming one of the most influential "Pioneers
in Sustainability" of our times.
Interested students can send a brief statement outlining their motivation (in English or German, not more than 150 words) to catherine.lippuner@sl.ethz.ch. The deadline for signing up is Sunday, February 22th.

Erdbebendienst (SED) leiten sollte.
wissenschaftlich ausgerichteten Ausstellung angesprochen.

Energy Consumption and Sustainable Energy Strategies
There is now wide agreement that our energy systems have to be re-organized in order to guarantee a sustainable energy future for both the societies of developed and developing countries. The current lecture series provides insights into energy
consumption patterns from the psychological perspective, gives information on the sustainability of different energy systems, identifies possibilities of alternative energy supply technologies in rural areas of developing countries, and discusses incentives
for energy saving.

Shenggen Fan, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI )
Global progress in improving food security and reducing poverty has been substantial but not satisfactory in recent years. In many regions, food insecurity not only continues to exist at unacceptable levels but is further threatened by emerging
factors and challenges: Population growth, increasingly complex supply chains, high and volatile food prices, natural resource constraints, and climate change – to mention but a few.
Through a number of channels, agricultural development has an especially important role to play in reducing and preventing food insecurity. Its impact ranges from increasing household ability to purchase and produce more nutritious food, to economy-wide
effects, such as lowering food prices and increasing government revenues to fund health, infrastructure, and nutrition intervention programmes.
In order to maximise the potential of agricultural development for improving food security in developing countries, a more innovative development portfolio must be adopted. In particular, there is an urgent need for innovations in technologies
and policies that tackle current and emerging challenges to global food security. The development community should especially encourage the generation of local innovation in policies and technologies. Local innovation should then be accompanied by a framework
for evaluating experiments and by a political and legal space, which allows transforming the lessons learned from successful experiments into large-scale initiatives.

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are spreading rapidly in developing countries. Recent research on ICT for development (ICT4D) has stressed the need to shift from a technology-led approach with focus on technical innovation towards
an approach that emphasises the creative use of already established technologies in their social context. The conference will focus on innovative ICT applications in developing countries and their contribution to development. It will also address challenges
for education, research and policy in ICT4D.
